I took this book with me on vacation and its a perfect beach/pool read. For 362 pages, it was a quick read: I whipped through it in two days.

It's a retelling of sorts of Jane Austen's Persuasion. Having not read Persuasion, I just went into the story looking to be entertained. And the book did just that. It was adorable, I quite liked it. It's one of those stories that brightens your mood: perfect to read on a sunny day (or those rainy/snowy days where you are looking for something to lighten your mood).

Good read, charming story with interesting characters
I LOVED this book! I couldn't put it down.
It wasn’t a bad book, but it wasn’t all that it could have been. I realize that it was loosely based on and inspired by Jane Austen’s Persuasion, but there really wasn’t enough of a relationship built for our two characters. However, the writing is good and I laughed out loud at times in reading the supporting characte line.
This book is advertised a retelling of Jane Austen's "Persuasion," but never having read that, all I can tell you is it's great fun. There are some quirky characters in the story (I absolutely loved Larry) and our relatable heroine is the conductor on the hot mess express! You'll definitely find yourself rooting for true love to triumph in the end. I listened to the Audible production. The narration is great and the pace is good. I never found myself losing interest or wanting any part of the story to hurry along. Definitely not a deep thinker, but it was great entertainment on a long drive! Highly recommend!
By the Book is a clever modern college campus novel that is perfect for book clubs. The author parallels Persuasion by Jane Austen in a sleek and snappy way. Knowing the plot of Persuasion does not give the book entirely away. It is full of trendy references and behaviors that do make it believable yet does refer to the issues of 200 years ago, such as marriage vs career; difficult communications; financial security and debt; loyalty vs manipulation. The author Julie Sonneborn is refreshing and spirited in this jaunt into academia and celebration of the love of books and authors.
Love this book of overcoming your own obstacles, staying fo used on what you want and desire even when everything is against you, even when you feel like you’re going at life alone. Take your pride, take your best friend, take your cat and your books and run with it. Believe in yourself, ask for help, but above all, never quit that which makes your heart sing.

My Thoughts This retelling of Austen’s Persuasion intrigued me from the beginning pages. I haven’t read the Austen book—that’s on my bucket list—but it is not necessary to have done so to enjoy By the Book.

Anne Corey is a bookish and delightful English professor who is hoping to finally earn a tenured position but must publish a book before that can happen. She has been working on it for a while, but so far, she has not been offered a publishing contract. Her days are spent teaching her classes; she hangs out with an old friend, Larry Fellor, another English professor; and locks herself away nights and weekends to work on her book.

The news that her college fiancé, Adam Martinez, has been hired as the new president of the college has catapulted her back in time, remembering their relationship and what happened to break them apart.

Meanwhile, Anne allows herself to begin a casual relationship with Rick Chasen, who has been added to the staff as a writer-in-residence. He pursues her, encourages her in her writing, and she thinks their relationship may help her finally get over Adam.

What happens next is stunning and changes everything Anne thought she knew about herself and about each of the men with whom she has been involved.

I enjoyed the feeling of being a part of the academic world with the characters. I also felt like I was sauntering along with them on the campus, entering the beautiful rooms that the author showed us, and finally, becoming part of their experiences. We had a vested interest in how their lives unfolded. Therefore, I was pleased with the ending, even though it was somewhat predictable, because it felt like the events were happening to old friends. 4 stars.
