AWESOME! First, I’ll give the same advice I got: Know as little about this book as possible before you run, RUN!!!, and grab a copy for yourself, stat! What a splendid atmospheric, creepy-crawly feeling, and super scary book!

It drew me in from page one. I loved the format, written as a set of short journal entries almost. I loved the twists. I loved the secrets that stayed unknown until nearly the very end.

I feel lucky to have discovered this book in my Goodreads feed a couple weeks ago. It was well worth the 2 week wait to receive it in the mail.

If you’re looking for a large serving of something creepy, set in space (creepy in its own right, no?) then look no farther! THIS is that book you’ve hoped to stumble upon.

Happy reading to all!

The Loneliest Girl in the Universe Lauren James 9781406375473 Books Reviews

Chilling to the core, I was gripped by this totally unique novel from the very first moment we meet protagonist Romy, a teenager left in charge of the spaceship she was born on, The Infinity, on a mission to reach an inhabitable planet far away from earth to establish a new civilisation. Her parents are dead, in fact the entire crew of The Infinity outside of Romy is dead, and while we don’t know yet why we do get the sense that the truth is horrifying.

Romy’s only lifeline to another living being is her regular communications with Molly at NASA, her therapist, friend, teacher and mentor; until Romy discovers that another spaceship is on its way to her. As The Eternity is fitted with the latest technology it’ll catch up with her ship in just a few years and Romy will no longer be completely alone.

It may sound like the best news imaginable but when something happening on earth breaks the communication lines between Romy and Molly, and Romy is alone once more, doubts start to set in about Earth, The Eternity and everything she’s been led to believe.

Man, I loved this book on so many levels! From its confined setting through to the mystery of what's truly happening on Earth and the Eternity lingering sinisterly at the edges, and from the slowly unraveling horrifying history of The Infinity to its kick-ass main character. Romy may not have been the intended commander of The Infinity but she has taken the challenge with both hands and at an extremely young age at that.

The Loneliest Girl in the Universe went a little over my head timey wimey wise at times (emails that were being send didn't arrive until months or even years later after a time the people in question would've already met? I was so confused!), but even so I haven’t felt this gripped by a fictional story in many months and it's opened my eyes to an entirely new genre so now I want to explore more YA space adventures!
let me start with... wow! This is one of the best psychological thriller I've read this year. When I first started reading this story I was pretty sure there would be a big romance with some tension... I was NOT prepared for what really happened. What a clever, well written, compelling and addictive story.

The build-up tension during the whole story is just perfect, you really don't know what is going on until you are in the middle of the action, holding your breath, completely absorbed in the story, devouring page after page until the early hours of the morning. It had been a really long time since a book had put me in such a stressful state.

Also, how original and unique is the idea behind this novel? It's set in the near future, when NASA has sent a spaceship into the deep space to reach a viable planet for humanity to develop. Romy happens to be only survivor left in that spaceship and, somehow, it's really easy to relate to her, even if she has never been in the Earth. I loved getting to know her and I surprised myself at how much I cared about her. Definitely a very well developed character.

I highly recommend this book to readers who enjoy a good thriller. Believe me, this story will surprise you, will shock you and will completely capture you!
This space fiction is a fast read as it is well-written. The plot skips along. The novel is well plotted, with twists and turns that prevent the reader from predicting what is going to happen next.

Sixteen-year-old, Romy Silvers is on a spaceship called the Infinity in the year 2067. She is en route to another possibly habitable planet called, HT3485 c, or Earth II, in another galaxy, Alpha Centauri. The entire trip was due to take just under 50 years, or in 31 more years. Romy was conceived on Infinity. She is the loneliest girl in the universe as her parents died in mysterious circumstances five years previously when she was 11 years old.

Romy’s only human contact is with Dr. Molly Simmons, a psychologist in NASA, who provides Romy with moral support in the form of audio messages or emails that take 18-24 months to reach Romy; Romy’s take the same amount of time to reach Molly. The only other respite is Romy’s favourite TV show, Loch and Ness, which is streamed to her, and on which she writes romantic fan fiction.

Things take a twist when a more powerful spaceship, the Eternity, takes off from Earth. The messages from its commander, J. Shoreditch, are a welcome addition to those from Molly. However, when Molly’s audios and emails cut out and when a new world order, UPR, takes over Earth, then things take a turn for the worse in every way for Romy.

We follow Romy as she is placed in increasingly more harrowing conditions on board the ship, when she reveals what happened to her parents, what J. Shoreditch turns out to be like, what the UPR is, who the astronauts mentioned from about a third of the way in are. There is suspense, world-building so we see what it would be like to be alone in outer space in a spaceship packed for many people to survive on another unseen planet.

There is some science, but this is not a book for just nerds who understand astrophysics. It is a real read for people everywhere, from pre-teens up. The feelings Lauren James evokes are visceral. The incidents feel real. Recommended.
Exceeded my expectations
This was a great book!!! Interesting concept and plausible. All came together at the end kinda of expected but with a twist!!!
