This is a terrific and honest account of what it's like to be a screenwriter. Inspired me to get back to my desk and WRITE. Mr Eckhart's an unsung legend.
To paraphrase an ancient wisdom, in order to become a screenwriter you need to be a screenwriter. Tricky, isn't it? WRITE WRITE WRITE is the only book on screenwriting I know that discusses how to accomplish that.
It's friendly, not just the style like a good friend it tells you what you want to hear and also what you would prefer to ignore, but better face. It doesn't try to make it look easier than what it is, or harder than what it really is.
WRITE WRITE WRITE offers important screenwriting insights, and nudges you to ask yourself whether you have what it takes to write movies. It's powerful in a way that it makes you think about business, craft, and beyond – about your calling.
I’ve got several shelves devoted to screenwriting books so it was a nice surprise to discover this very personal guide to what it’s really like being a professional screenwriter. The content feels quite eclectic in it’s range and that’s all to the good as it’s clear the author is passing on the little nuggets he’s personally discovered along the way.
Mr Eckhart make a good travelling companion as he guides you through the screenwriting trenches; informative but nice and relaxed. The book keeps you engaged the whole way through and I read it in a couple of gulps which is always a good sign.
Also appreciated is the author’s emphasis on love and honesty – both for the craft and as a screenwriter/successfully functioning human being. It was good to see and delivered in such a way that wasn’t preachy.
All in all this feels like an authentic glimpse of what one can realistically expect as a professional screenwriter. No doubt it will scare some readers but assuredly it make others even more determined.
Highly recommended.
Daniel’s penned several feature-length movies, worked on TV shows and has adapted several novels for the small screen – all while holding down a job. WRITE WRITE WRITE outlines his experiences in his journey towards this goal, and how he keeps motivated.
It’s a good read – it doesn’t feel preachy but it does point out some sobering pointers, and it’s relayed with honesty and humour.
One of my favourite tips, right off the bat, was to “enjoy procrastination – if you feel guilty about it, it won’t be productive”.
Despite claiming the book is not a how-to-write tome, Daniel’s anecdotes offer us plenty of this sort of material alongside the practical advice on making it as a writer in the industry.
Overall, I’d say this is a great read for new and more established writers, because it gives a good balance of first-timer tricks and tips, as well as insight into the rocky path to success and tried and tested methods to get there.
Above all, though, it’s really motivating!
This book is one of the most motivational joyous books about writing that it has been my delight to read. It's not a system or patented screenwriting method, it's a happy book about being/becoming a writer who is happy in their craft, delivered from a seasoned veteran who can understand and convey what it is that makes writing truly fulfilling and sustaining over the course of a long career.
Though it's a very simple read the advice Daniel gives is candid and kind with plenty practical tips for both new and established writers to be inspired by. Writing is hard and with a varied and successful writing career to date, but not without it's difficulties there's an honesty to this book that will prepare you for dealing with the tough side of continuous creation without being prescriptive and including some interesting insights and anecdotes from other writers illustrating that these practices work for all writers.
Above all this book is a call to action, to write, to love one's craft, to develop good habits and instincts that will keep you happy in the profession and to always reconnect with the joy that got you writing in the first place. I loved it, it's a book I shall keep near to make sure my own writing never suffers from the neglect of good practice.
Love the effort. Just...I get it; write, write, write!
